Hi my friend had her band fitted in January of this year and since this date has had 2 fills. The latest fill, which she had 2 weeks ago, has made it very difficult for her to eat ny type of solid food. She is pleased in one sense, because the weight is coming off, but worried her band may be too full! Any advice?

Your Weight Loss Surgery Answeres:
Hi, it shouldn’t be like this. The idea of a gastric band is that you can live with it long term and it will help you stabilise your weight at whatever point you want it to. You should be able to eat normal foods in small quantities and still loose or maintain weight (when you get to where you need to be weight wise). If you are 2 weeks post adjustment and can’t eat properly, there is something wrong it is not healthy to be like this for a lot of reasons. We see a lot of people in our clinics who have been over tightened, and have the same experience as you. We would suggest you need to get some good advice and probably some fluid out of your band. A band that is too tight can also be dangerous and could increase the potential for an erosion. Research shows that you will loose more weight with a properly adjusted band than with an over tight band. We are so sorry you are experiencing this, it really doesn’t have to be this way (is that from a song!). If your provider knows about this and hasn’t done anything, you should seek proper advice from a NIOPPS registered practitioner, who can help you learn to live with your band.

NIOPPS is the National Institute of Obesity Programme Practice Standards. It is an organisation set up to set and monitor standards of care given to besity surgery patients – and not before time too in our view!!!
