Just ask Anne Diamond, she had one fitted too high that did nothing too!! Sorry to say it is all too common. A properly fitted band is the start of a journey, how much success is down to how well you work with the band, and that is down to how well you are taught to work with it, and that is very much about the aftercare. We have a major problem with things like radiological fills, as the patient, gets no time to experiment with foods as the band is gradually tightened to the sweet spot. If a patient hasn’t had an opportunity to try different foods in different amounts, how on earth do you know how much fluid to put in. Simply looking at a screen that shows fluid passing through a band is not enough. What advice is given on textures etc at that time? The best examples from around the world, only use radiological adjustments if there is a problem, not as the main stream way of restricting foods/fluids. In short time with your NIOPPS accredited practitioner is invaluable especially in the first few months. We are sorry you have had problems, if you are looking for another procedure, make sure you ask what the clinics results are before choosing who to put your trust in. Best of luck YWLS

Your Weight Loss Surgery Answeres:
Hi, it shouldn’t be like this. The idea of a gastric band is that you can live with it long term and it will help you stabilise your weight at whatever point you want it to. You should be able to eat normal foods in small quantities and still loose or maintain weight (when you get to where you need to be weight wise). If you are 2 weeks post adjustment and can’t eat properly, there is something wrong it is not healthy to be like this for a lot of reasons. We see a lot of people in our clinics who have been over tightened, and have the same experience as you. We would suggest you need to get some good advice and probably some fluid out of your band. A band that is too tight can also be dangerous and could increase the potential for an erosion. Research shows that you will loose more weight with a properly adjusted band than with an over tight band. We are so sorry you are experiencing this, it really doesn’t have to be this way (is that from a song!). If your provider knows about this and hasn’t done anything, you should seek proper advice from a NIOPPS registered practitioner, who can help you learn to live with your band.

Alfie, if you live near a gateway clinic, which I hope you do! Then I would reccommend you ask their advice, they know their stuff! They'll show you what needs to be done to get you losing weight. I'm at their Nottingham clinic.xx

I had my band put in 5 months ago, I've been eating normal solid food since 4 weeks after the op.
No diet foods allowed, just lifestyle changes. They make it so easy for me and believe me I'm not an easy person!!I'd reccommend gateway 100%
Tried everything before I went for this, wish I'd done it years ago. xx

Hiya, just wanna say that I've had a gastric band with Gateway, couldn't have gone any better! Surgery A1, hospital same! Gateway Nurses fab! Nothing too much bother.Everything you need included in price. Met others in waiting room who've paid for aftercare only with gateway but had operation somewhere else, they're usually fed up that they didn't come to gateway in first place.I've heard some disgusting tales of their treatment .
Sister in law had by bypass couple of years ago, feels like ****, lost weight, put it back on, feels rubbish, needs vitamin injections etc. Wishes she'd gone for band too.
In America I've heard that they are putting bands on people who've had by pass and put weight back on. o in my opinion I wouldn't even consider any thing as major as the bypass!

Ive had a gastric band last year without any aftercare. Ive not lost much weight, what would be the next best move to help me start losing weight again?
thanks

Your Weight Loss Surgery Answer:

Hi Alfie, I’m sorry to hear that you have not lost much weight, we hear similar stories from lots of other patients who have had surgery with other providers with little follow up or the wrong type of follow up.
Don’t be down hearted, we can help you. We have many success stories from patients like yourself who didn’t have the initial surgery with us. These patients often tell us that they regret not coming to Gateway Health for their initial surgery.
Gateway Health deliver the most successful weight loss surgery aftercare programme that has ever been used in conjunction with both the Gastric balloon and Gastric band. The programme lasts for a minimum of 12 months and consists of both educational elements with lifestyle change adaptation. In a recent study, patients of Gateway health showed an average of 73.5% excess weight loss in the first 6 months. Previous similar studies show between 30-33% excess weight loss over the same period.
Please feel to contact us if you would like further information or if you would like to book an assessment appointment. 0845 900 339
